Unlike the French Open, Americans are playing well at All England Lawn Tennis Club. Yesterday, Andy Roddick and Lindsay Davenport both marched through the round of 16 to the quarter-finals. Roddick, seeded 2nd for the tournament, defeated Alexander Popp in straight sets (7-5, 6-4, 6-4) while Davenport, the 5 seed, trounced Karolina Sprem in straight sets as well (6-2, 6-2).
Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams both advanced today in straight sets. Capriati beat Nadia Petrova, 6-4, 6-4 while Williams defeated Tatiana Golovin, 6-2, 6-1. The victories by Capriati and Williams set up a head-to-head matchup in the semifinals between the respective seven and one seeds.
Roddick will play Sjeng Schalken, the 12th seed, in an attempt to advance to the semifinals for the second year in a row. Davenport will play Maria Sharapova, a very talented 17 year-old Russian. The Capriati/Williams match will be tomorrow as will the Roddick match. Davenport is scheduled (say it like a Brit for full effect) to play on Thursday.
