The perks of being a waiter are few and "family meal" is definitely one of them. But so we are clear, not included in that free feeding are bottles of pricey wine—as one waiter at the tony Italian restaurant SD26 recently found out, after he allegedly walked away with a Christmas bounty of eight bottles from the restaurant's private "Wine Connoisseurs Room."
According to SD26 owner Tony May on Christmas Eve the restaurant's 31-year-old waiter William Pomakoy slipped into the private wine room with an empty shopping bag and stocked up on eight bottles of vino worth $6,434. Unfortunately for him, the whole thing was caught on tape. And now he's been charged with theft and the restaurant wants its booze returned. "We want this wine back," May told the Post. "This is some of the better wine that we have on our entire list."
No word on what the wines were, but let this be a lesson to criminal waiters the world over: If you are going to dip into the wine cellar, know where the cameras are first.
