NYC has a long and hallowed tradition of belligerent well-to-do people exercising their right to be total nightmares at brunch. And today, the NY Post has brought us a classic tale of Nepotism Gone Wild. This story has a little of everything: belligerent brunching, anonymous allegations, vague threats, Fox News, and desperate invocations of an all-powerful, all-knowing Rich Dad.
The Post reports that Michael Gabelli, the 36-year-old son of Wall Street money manager Mario Gabelli (who is reportedly worth upwards of $750 million), was kicked out of a fancy brunch at Midtown hotspot Hunt & Fish Club for arguing with waiters and generally acting like an entitled brat. He apparently was dining with Fox Business’ Charlie Gasparino, who tried to calm him down but only seems to have escalated the situation.
Michael Gabelli was thrown out of the Midtown steakhouse after he started yelling when the bill arrived.
A witness said, “He forcefully argued with the servers and managers. Gasparino tried to help. Charlie kept saying things like, ‘You’re embarrassing your father.’”
After Gabelli calmed down, he tried to get a drink, but when the bartender refused to serve him, he flipped out. So he was thrown out, but not before dropping, “Don’t you know who my father is?…He runs this city.”
The restaurant had no comment about the alleged incident, and there have been no other reports about it, so take this all with a grain of salt. Does it ring true? Maybe, but that's because we've been down this road before with similar offspring of NYC titans.
There's not much else written about Michael Gabelli online, although he was accused of raping the daughter of a high-ranking military official while attending Boston College in 1997. Charges were filed but ultimately "settled in private."
