Organic rooftop farming is all the rage these days, with places like Roberta's and Brooklyn Grange growing vegetables and other produce just a few hundred feet above street level. And now it seems that one of the city's swankiest hotels is looking to get into the mix: the Waldorf-Astoria New York has recently installed beehives on its roof, with plans to harvest honey and help pollinate plants in midtown.
Rooftop hotel hives may sound novel, but it turns out the Waldorf-Astoria isn't the first to stick bees above the penthouse suite. The Intercontinental hotels in Boston and Times Square both harbor beehives, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Paris has plans to give guests complimentary honey pots from the hives they installed earlier this year.
DIY beehives have been popping up left and right in the city since beekeeping was legalized in 2010. Since then, the city has seen an increase in swarms, stings, and bee-related blog post puns.
