The month of February has been a good one for downtown restaurants serving upscale food from south of the border. While the East Village got its own Empellón TriBeCa went and got Super Linda, a decidedly trendy bi-level take on Latin American cuisine with serious nightlife cred.
The new 85-seater comes from Matt Abramcyk (Smith & Mills, The Beatrice Inn), Richard Ampudia (Cafe Habana), Serge Becker (La Esquina, The Box) and chef John Martinez (Tiny's) so you probably can guess what the clientele looks like (skinny). The restaurant boasts an airy dining room up top with views onto West Broadway and Reade Street, sure, but it also has a throwback of a lounge downstairs for the cool kids (and of course a bar with an assortment of cocktails and margaritas mixings). But the upstairs? It sure does look lindo.
Meanwhile the food hails from all over Latin America with extra emphasis on Uruguay and Argentina and is generally pretty sharable in size. Think charred beets ($10), tostada de esquites ($8), red and green snapper with pico de gallo ($28), sides like black beans ($5) and, Italian-accented dishes like gnocchi with zucchini, corn and tomato ($17).
