We don't often write about restaurants that haven't opened yet, but when one of the hottest chefs in another city is planning to bring their skills (and menu) our way, we'll make an exception! Which is to say, Mission Chinese Food, arguably one of the most popular spots in the Bay Area these days, is coming to the LES. And it is bringing its chef, Danny Bowien, along with it!
The New York Mission will open in the old Rhong Tiam Garden location at 154 Orchard and will hopefully debut in March. "We could have opened another one here in San Francisco, but I love New York, the way it pushes you." Bowien explained to the Times. "It inspires me so I wanted to come to New York."
The new Mission will have a similar menu as the original (so think, "Smoked beef brisket soup noodles, ma po tofu, salt cod fried rice with escolar confit and Chinese sausage, Shanghainese chow mein, and chilled buckwheat noodles with ham broth and salted trout roe") and, also like the original, a donation will be made to a food bank for each entree sold. Meanwhile the original will stay open in California, with Bowien's "wingman" Jesse Koide taking the helm.
This could be fun! To get a sense of what to expect, you can watch the chef interact with Anthony Bourdain and Martha Stewart:
