The handouts last from noon to 8 p.m., and you can find your nearest location here. However, if you're serious about this, it's worth calling ahead because not all shops participate every year; in 2006 the miserly Ben & Jerry's at 154 Bleecker Street (now closed?) backed out of the tradition "due to construction."
