The salads are fresh (if sometimes on the small side) and the $8 lunch special (soup and 1/2 sandwich) is not a bad bet. There are seats available, but it can get busy with the Citibank folk. And if you are around on the weekend... three-course bacon brunch, anyone?

24-20 Jackson Avenue, 718- 361-0707

The ingredients are fresh, the decor is homey and the prices are right. All in all a cozy spot to settle in for lunchâthough take-out is available.

21-52 44th Drive, 718-361-0013

And for those times when you are in Long Island City you've got Court Square, where the menu is exactly what you expect, the service is about what you would expect and the decor is shiny. And while it isn't really a standing option it is a very standard option, so that's why it's here.

45-30 23rd Street, 718-392-1222
(M. Wells)
M. Wells: For the times you want a standard diner lunch you've got Court Square, and for the times you want a crazy take on diner fare you've got this foodie-mecca which serves lunch Tuesday through Thursday. It's a bit of a walk from the rest of this quadrant, but where else will you find chef Hugue Dufour's pickled pig tongue with housemade soda crackers, bone marrow and escargot. Not to mention the meatloaf.

21-17 49th Avenue, 718-425-6917
