In this week's Quadrant we look at Village Pizza, Dirty Bird to-go, Tea & Sympathy and Corner Bistro.

You want a simple New York-style slice to go? You got it. The crust is nice and crisp with a doughy middle and the sauces and toppings are what you are expecting. This isn't Motorino, but it is good. It's also a total hole-in-the-wall, so with summer here you probably want to take your $2.50 plain slice outdoors.

65 8th Avenue, 212-243-4367

(Eating In Translation's flickr)
Dirty Bird to-go: There are many people who swear by this house of fried chicken—and with good reason! The bird may be dirty in name, but the chicken they serve tastes fresh and clean. And the portions are more than generous. How much do people love the Bird? Well, Matt Stone of South Park and Book of Mormon fame told us "It isn't just my favorite restaurant in the city it is my favorite restaurant in the whole world." That good enough for you?

204 West 14th Street, 212-620-4836

(Paul V. Carter's flickr)
Corner Bistro: There are many great burgers in New York and the burger at this local watering hole stands proudly among them. For fifty years people have been popping into this pub for a beer and a tasty, juicy slab of beef inside a bun and there is no reason anyone should stop now. Don't expect a fancy menu or the sweetest service, just expect a filling and delicious lunch. Also, the fries are surprisingly good.

331 W 4th Street, 212-242-9502

(jpchan's flickr)
Tea & Sympathy: Looking for a silly sit-down lunch? Go British at this tea spot which boasts a surprisingly solid menu in its cramped but very cute and quaint quarters. You probably don't need to bother with the desserts, but the tea selection is deep, the scones are buttery and the sandwiches and mains (Welsh rarebit!) are very Anglophile-friendly. Fair warning though, they can be a bit hoity-toity during busy lunch services.

108 Greenwich Avenue, 212-807-8329
