Eat Cetera: Fight Hunger, Brooklyn Uncorked, Summit's Drinks

City Harvest rescues vast quantities of excess food that the food industry would have otherwise discarded, then deliver it free of charge to more than 600 community food programs. As summer looms, the need is more acute, because thousands of NYC children who depend on school lunch no longer have that option. According to City Harvest, a donation of $50 can help feed two children for the entire summer, and to raise money they're holding their annual Skip Lunch Fight Hunger fundraiser on May 12th. Here's how it works: Participants sign up as a team captain for their company, organization, or school. By May 12th, team captains receive brown paper lunch bags, posters, and facts about childhood hunger to help publicize the event, and the captains collect donations. Last year, the program raised over $400,000 and helped feed over 22,000 kids for the summer. This year, starting on May 5th, Citibank will be offering sandwiches to those who make donations at a Citibank branches, and Whole Foods will be running a register promotion to help raise additional funds from May 11th - 13th.
For every $1 donation made at the register, you'll receive a reusable lunch tote.
Tomorrow's the fourth annual Brooklyn Uncorked, which brings together winemakers and food artisans from opposite ends of Long Island in one place, in the spacious BAMCafé. $40 gets you four hours of wine and food tasting from nearly 50 wineries paired with food samples from a wide array of restaurants, curated by the fine folks at Edible Brooklyn and Edible Manhattan. Among those creating dishes are DuMont, Dressler, Txikito, Gramercy Tavern, Stinky Bklyn, Savoy, D. Coluccio & Sons, Tipsy Parson, Watty & Meg, and Good Fork. To get you in the mood, "food porn" will be screened as a run-up to the Fourth Annual NYC Food Film Festival in June.

4 to 8 p.m. // BAMCafé [30 Lafayette Avenue at Ashland Place, Fort Greene] // Tickets
The Summit Bar (133 Avenue C), which Time Out deemed "Most Democratic Cocktail Bar" and New York declared the "Best Cocktail Bar" of 2010, has just introduced its spring and summer cocktail menu. One of co-owner Greg Seider's (Minetta Tavern) newest concoctions happens to be well-timed with Cinco de Mayo: Called "Breaking the Law," the name hearkens back to a time when Mezcal was only legal in Mexico, and Mezcal runners used to smuggle it across the border to Guatemala (or so we're told). It's made with "illegal" mezcal reposado, Dimmi Italian cordial, fresh lime, chipotle chili agave, Summit summer orange bitters, cucumber, and topped with sodaâvelvety perfection.

And now that the warm weather seems to be here to stay, The Summit's small back patio is going to be seeing a lot of use. Seider tells us he's installing a smoker in the back for regular bbq nights, and hopes to one day use a greenhouse around the corner for a year-round, semi-private beer garden in an actual garden. In the meantime, peruse the new menu additions below, and be sure to try Off To The Races, Seider's chipotle-laced twist to the Mint Julep:

Breaking The Law - 12

Illegal mezcal reposado, Dimmi Italian cordial, fresh lime, chipotle chili agave, Summit summer orange bitters, cucumber. topped with soda

Lions In London - 11

Beefeater 24 gin infused with Rooibos tea, Aperol,Dolin sweet vermouth, Summit summer orange bitters

Bobs Your Uncle - 12

DH Khran gin, lemongrass lime basil agave, fresh lemon, lemongrass bitters, topped with soda

Off To The Races - 12

Buffalo Trace bourbon, peach apricot chipotle chili agave, fresh lemon, shiso leaf, Summit orange bitters

Say Hello to my Little Friend - 11

Beefeater 24 gin, Agwa de Bolivia coca leaf liquor, fresh lemon, agave, grapfruit bitters, topped with soda

Ground to Glass - 10

Corralejo blanco tequila, red pepper puree, cucumber, fresh lime, Summit blended bitters, hickory smoked salt

The Apology - 11

Old Raj 100 gin, Cantena Chardonnay, apricot cordial,Summit saffron orange bitters, dash St. Germain

She Loves Mei She Loves Mei Not - 11

Barsol Pisco, muddles edible Ecuadorian rose petals,Schezwan peppercorn infused agave, fresh lemon, egg white

The Situation - 12

Afghani Raisin Infused Rittenhouse Rye,Caraway infused agave, fresh lemon, Summit Orange Bitters

Shu Jam Fizz - 10

DH Krahn gin, apricot jam, fennel Infusion, peach bitters, fresh lemon, soda

Charmaneâs Star - 11

Russian Standard vodka, cucumber, shiso leaf, fresh lime,Vietnamese cinnamon infused agave, rhubarb bitters

The Govâner - 12

Yamazaki 12 year whisky, toasted cardamom infused agave,Japanese yuzu, fresh orange juice
