Upper East Side bakery Petite Shell began turning out exceptional rugelach out of their shop on Lexington Avenue earlier this year. Now, owner Shmilly Gruenstein tackles another great Jewish tradition: the babka. This week, the bakery began selling Dark Chocolate and Nutella Babka—and it's freaking incredible.
The bakery kindly delivered some (STILL WARM) babkas to our office this morning and—no joke—they were gone in under 10 minutes. What makes this babka so special? It could be that it contains Nutella, an African 70% dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate chips, revealing a "lava of goodness," in Gruenstein's words, when sliced. Or that it's magnificently moist, courtesy of dozens upon dozens of layers of butter in between each layer of dough.
For both of those reasons, it's worth a trip to the bakery to score a loaf ($13.50) for yourself. They're only offering the babka on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and we'd recommend getting there early for the fresh-out-of-the-oven versions. If you can't get up for the weekend treat, the bakery also offers a daily Nutella Rugelach that doesn't skimp on the chocolate or butter either.
