Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, purveyors of the finest $13 pint money can buy, have issued a massive recall of all of their ice cream products after a sample tested positive for listeria. The organism was discovered in a sample that was collected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, prompting not only the recall but also the shutter of all Jeni's scoop shops and their kitchen where they manufacture the ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches. "We are enlisting the help of experts so we can identify the cause, eliminate it, and return as quickly as possible to the business of making ice cream," founder Jeni Britton said on the site.
This is the second massive ice cream recall to be mounted in the last week, as Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries has been forced to recall all of their products after listeria sickened multiple people throughout the country, killing three. Even more distressing, the outbreak is now thought to have been raging since 2010, meaning the company will now have to take even more invasive steps to sanitize its many facilities. There's no early indication that these two events are related.
Luckily for Jeni's, the smaller operation—they employ under 200 people in their baking kitchen and production facility—should make it easier to clean up and get back on their feet. We've reached out to Britton to find out when she expects they'll be able to resume making ice creams and we'll update if we hear back. Maybe their triumphant return will include some kind of tummy soother.
