At some point yesterday, a crustacean-obsessed bandit (or bandits!) pulled off the crime of the century, audaciously stealing a seven foot, 1000-lb lobster statute that's the mascot of a popular Hamptons restaurant.

Kobe, a giant lobster statue holding a sign that reads "Eat Beef," welcomed customers to Amagansett's Banzai Burger, an sushi-and-burger fusion joint near the Montauk Highway. For what it's worth, Banzai Burger doesn't actually serve lobster: "Kobe the lobster was saying, 'Don't eat my kind; eat beef,' " explained co-owner Alex Duff. But who would do such a thing? "This had to be a real operation, because they needed a truck and a couple of strong hands," said manager Steve Kasuba. "One person couldn't pick it up; it was heavy."

The restaurant, which opened earlier this year ("It's down the road from Cyril's where lots of people get drunk at happy hours by the side of the Montauk Highway," said our source in the Hamptons. "I've heard the food is decent."), has yet to report the lobster-napping to the police. They are currently offering up $1000 worth of free food and booze to anyone who can solve the case, and we can only hope that Kobe won't meet the same gruesome fate as some other pilfered restaurant mascots.
