After 20 years in the neighborhood, popular Bavarian bierhaus and German restaurant Zum Schneider is getting booted from its Avenue C location.

Zum Schneider will close by the end of February, according to the restaurant owner Sylvester Schneider. The restaurant was known for its Oktoberfest celebrations, now celebrated in a 1,000-person tent on the east side for "Munich on the East River," and for drawing soccer fans to Avenue C and East Seventh Street.

Schneider told Gothamist in an email the landlord was "not interested" in renewing the lease, "despite the fact that we've been in excellent standing for 20 years."

But back in 2006, the cooperative building at 229 East Seventh Street, which sits above the restaurant, tried to evict the Bavarian restaurant, claiming Zum Schneider was excessively noisy, operated a sidewalk cafe during the week and after midnight on weekends, and a string of other alleged lease violations, court records say.

Schneider told EVGrieve the news is a "strange development," and "rather sad," considering empty storefronts in the East Village.

Schneider says the restaurant-portion will close Feb. 1, and the last annual Karneval party will double as the beer garden's closing party. Its final day will be February 29th.

"We will be looking for a new location in 2020 and plan to stay in Manhattan," Schneider said.

Emails listed for the owners at the co-op—a Housing Development Fund Corporation—were not returned for comment on Zum Schneider's closure.
