Well before COVID-19 upended everyday life here in New York City, the first neighborhoods to be impacted were the Chinatowns of New York (all nine of them), forcing many to adjust hours, shutter or close temporarily, even before new operational rules were state-mandated.

Now, in an effort to boost Chinatown businesses, a fundraiser called Dumplings Against Hate — a reference to disturbing bias attacks against Asians during the pandemic — will take place this Friday. And the group of organizers has enlisted producers from Netflix’s The Patriot Act with Hasan Minaj to help.

For a minimum contribution of $25, donors will get a peek on how the segment, “Don't Ignore the Asian Vote in 2020”—which explored implicit biases against the Asian voting bloc in U.S. elections—was developed with showrunner Prashanth Venkataramanujam, segment producer Amy segment producer Amy Zhang, and lead animator Brandon Sugiyama on tap to explain their process.

Participants are also encouraged to order delivery (and tip well!) from their favorite (still operating) local Chinatown joint.

“It just seemed like there was just a really big appetite to help our neighbors survive this. To me it just felt like a gut instinct,” said Winn Periyasamy, an organizer for Dumplings Against Hate.

Before PAUSE went into effect, the city’s largest Chinese restaurant, the 800-seat eatery Jing Fong on Elizabeth Street off Canal Street in Manhattanhad already reduced hours. Manager Tammy Law told Gothamist, when there's "no customers, I close. If customers are coming, I'll open." Others were fully closing up shop at the time. And as time passes, the chance for a reopening diminishes for many.

In addition to the remote-event proceeds, there's a GoFundMe set up with an aim to raise $50,000 (currently they are over $30,000) for an emergency relief fund formed by Asian Americans For Equality, a nonprofit group working with small businesses. The funds will work as a loan awarded to eligible small businesses in all nine Chinatowns (and Midtown's Koreatown) with 50 employees who saw at least a 25% dip in sales following the coronavirus outbreak.

The fundraiser takes place at 7 p.m. on April 11th; more at dumplingsagainsthate.com.
