Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights North has no shortage of nightlife options, but a recent addition to the burgeoning stretch between Park and Sterling is hoping to set itself apart from other bars in the area. 739 Franklin opened in early April, but in addition to drinks and food, the bar is hoping to push the arts scene in the area, by providing a gathering space as well. Co-owner Glenn DeRoche, who grew up in Crown Heights with his sister and partner Arianna, considers the establishment a "living room" for the community, with one of the most diverse crowds on the street.

Originally planned as an event space, 739 Franklin has evolved into the bar/lounge/event space that it is now. In addition to a full bar with the requisite cocktail menu, the venue has a "focused" food menu with "bar food beyond the fryer". The food menu, as well as the space itself, has changed with input from customers.

The DeRoches have plenty planned in the coming months. They're hammering out final details with Universal Records for Black Music Month (that's this month) events at the space; working with Satellite magazine on an event series to begin this Summer with original works of art for exhibition at the bar and publication in the magazine (they're accepting portfolios now); brunch is slated to be added Saturdays and Sundays at the end of June. They also hope to have some outdoor space for customers to enjoy later this year.

Saturdays at 10 p.m. is the bar's continuing bi-weekly live music night with Afro-Cuban Music featured tonight. Happy hour is Monday - Friday from 4pm-8pm and Saturday/Sunday from 2pm-8pm with $4 cocktails and $1 off tap and bottle beer. Late night specials during the Summer are 12am-2am Monday - Thursday and 1am-3am on Saturdays.
