The once venerable Consumer Reports is really trying to upset people this week! First they ruffle the Apple fanboy feathers by pointing out that the new iPad runs a little hotter than the old one. Then they go and try and tell people that frozen bagels come "close" to the real thing. At least they didn't push those fake Brooklyn water bagels!
To be fair, the magazine never says frozen bagels are as good or better than fresh ones, but the Yonkers-based magazine still manages to hurt our sensibilities by even suggesting they compare.
To come to their "conclusions" testers tried "eight plain bagels and four with 'everything': onion, garlic, sesame seed, poppy seed, and other toppings. They also tried Thomas’ Bagel Thins, which cut calories and let you eat a bagel sandwich without unhinging your jaw." For each one they tried them at room temperature and toasted. And according to them:
Dunkin’ Donuts, Lender’s Original, and Costco are the best choices, but be careful which Lender’s you choose: Its refrigerated Bagel Shop version was just so-so. Thomas’ Bagel Thins are a decent option if you’re watching your weight, though they taste more like rolls than bagels.
Costco bagels! Anyway, of the winning Dunkin' bagels they say, "Tastes freshly baked, chewy crust, plenty of pull when bitten, chewy inside. Toasting lessens pull and chewiness." Whatever. We'll stick with the real thing, thank you very much. Closest you'll see us to one of those things packaged as a bagel is one of the discs people peddle as Montreal-style.
