Many in this country celebrate Mardi Gras with one too many Hurricanes and a fat stack of beads, but historically—and in the rest of the world—Shrove Tuesday means consuming pancakes, as further solidified by next Tuesday's second life as International Pancake Tuesday. To mark the occasion, the fine folks at Ferrero have once again partnered with Cronut creator Dominique Ansel to bring a gratis sweet treat to the masses, this time in the form of a conical pancake topped with a dollop of Nutella.
Next Tuesday, February 17th, the duo will take over Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal for a celebration of pancakes, including Ansel's artistic interpretation of a pancake shaped like an ice cream cone. We got a little sneak peek of the treat, which has a texture similar to that of a madeleine, a small, molded cake from France. The two-bite affair also comes with a sprinkle of coarse salt, adding a little more of a chef's touch to what's really a simple breakfast food.
Ansel and the Ferrero team will be handing out a select number of pancake cones, so arrival before the 11 a.m. start time is advised for serious Nutella freaks. Other chefs will be on hand also, flipping bitty silver dollar pancakes to folks waiting on line. There'll also be a DIY pancake bar complete with Nutella and bananas, strawberries and other fruit. The festivities last until 4 p.m., so really more of a lunch break treat for local working stiffs—but hey, you have unused vacation days, right?
