It used to be that if you wanted a taste of of locally cured pickles or bacon caramel popcorn at the Brooklyn Flea, you had to first fight past hordes of bargain hunters diving for refurbished cabinets and vintage jewelry. Until now! The recently expanded Williamsburg Flea is launching a food-only Saturday market, cheekily named "Smorgasburg."
Starting May 21, Smorgasburg will feature more than 100 vendors ("packaged, cooked, raw, Mason Jar'd, and more"), including local faves The Meat Hook and McClure's Pickles, plus a Greenmarket with farmers like Hudson Valley Duck and Hot Bread Kitchen. "As the food component of the Flea has continued to get more popular, we have been facing one of those rich-man's problems: Too many exciting new food applicants, not enough food spots," explain the Flea's founders, Eric Demby and Jonathan Butler. "The answer is a no-brainer: create the city's largest outdoor food market!"
The Brooklyn Flea flea market will still operate with some food in Fort Greene on Saturdays, and again in Williamsburg on Sundays. Check with the Smorgasburg Twitter for updates and vendor additions—who knows, maybe the Dunkin' Donuts "hearty snacks" truck will stop by.
