It snowed yesterday, it's going to snow tomorrow, it'll definitely snow again on Tuesday, and maybe again at the end of the week and every day from here on! Everything is miserable, and there's no reason to leave your apartment and/or sad little hobbit hole other than to get food or make money so you can buy more food. Perhaps someone will even be kind enough to bring you a sandwich so you don't have to shuffle through the slush. If you do choose to escape your wintry prison cell, there are things to eat and drinks to drink. Here's where to do it this week.
On Monday, Burke & Wills on the Upper West Side will be celebrating Australia Day with a special 5-course feast. Dishes from Down Under include a kangaroo pork loin made with sweet potato and bok choy, a whole roasted barramundi, and pavlova cake for dessert. The dinner costs $55 per person, or $95 when paired with a selection of Australian wines; you can make a reservation through the restaurant.
Head to the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) on the Upper East Side on Tuesday for a special wine tasting focusing on terroir in Bordeaux as part of the institute's Wine Tour de France series. Expert sommeliers will discuss how climate, topography and other environmental factors influence wine. Six high-end wines will be available for a tasting, all paired with bread, cheese and charcuterie. The event costs $115 to attend ($95 if you're a member) and kicks off at 7 p.m.; purchase a ticket online.
And on Thursday the Culinary Historians of New York will host a talk on baby food at the Brooklyn Kitchen in Williamsburg. NYU professor Amy Bentley will discuss how baby food and its mid-twentieth century commercialization has affected childhood and adult diet, plus the event will be preceded by a martini-and-cocktail laden reception. The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and costs $40 to attend, $25 for members and $10 for students; you can purchase a ticket online.
