And the twists just keep coming in the tale of beleaguered bagel institution H&H! Last night was the hotly anticipated "Save H&H" rally at Riverside Park, where about 25 people showed up, and there were not, as promised, free bagels. But there were some interesting hints about where the store might land next.
West Side Rag was at the Park to cover the action and spoke to National Business Manager Marc Fitz, who said the company is already looking for a new place to set up shop on the Upper West Side, and they're "considering locations" close to the original 80th St and Broadway store. He also said that to keep up with their $67,500 per month rent, H & H would have to raise the price of their bagels to $2.40 a pop, which is a helluva price for a joint that won't even toast your bread. (They're currently $1.40 each, which is arguably already a bit excessive).
Finch said he hears the landlord at the 80th St location is already planning to rent out the space to a bank, and that the shop will officially close on Thursday. Meanwhile, James Besser, the rally organizer, says he's planning another meeting next Tuesday, location TBD.
