Hey, your bagel this morning could have been worse; at least it wasn't covered in blood. (Apologies to those who order their Everything bagels with a schmear of plasma.) We mention this because that is exactly what two elementary school students in New Jersey were served earlier this month. The employee responsible for the bloody bagels has since been fired for the fluid f-up.
The bloody incident occurred on January 9th at the Central Avenue elementary school in Madison, NJ. Apparently at least two students were served bagels with blood on them and complained to school officials. According to Kathy Penna, director of client services for Pomptonian Food Services, "a cafeteria employee had cut herself while slicing the bagels and accidentally bled on several bagels. Instead of using a bagel guillotine to slice the bagels, the employee had used a knife."
The employee, a 14-year veteran of Pomptonian, did not report the accident and kept working, which is a violation of sanitation rules. After a one-day investigation the employee was fired. According to Pomptonian president Mark Vidovich. "the remaining 10 bagels were pulled but at least 16 other bagels, which could have been affected, were sold that day." And so the hunger begins...
