The Williamsburg bakery and indispensable hangover food purveyor La Villita has gone the way of so many victims of gentrification before it. This weekend the quirky corner space—famous for as much for its risque cake toppings as its low-priced but delicious egg sandwiches—was emptied out of its baking equipment and shut down for good. The owner, Alfonso Sosa, told us that after 17 years in business, the owner of the building, located on the corner of Grand and Bedford, was demanding a $10,000 a month rent increase.

"No lease," Sosa explained outside the shop on Saturday. "He wants $10,000 more." Asked if he planned to open for business in a less obscenely-priced location, Sosa, 46, said no. "I'm moving to Pennsylvania with my family."

It's unclear what establishment will take over the hole-in-the wall space—it's a little too small for a Duane Reade, but maybe there's room for a Subway? The nearest Subway is over five blocks away!
