On a recent scouting trip of islands around New York City, Nick at Scouting noticed a small land mass with a lighthouse on it. The tiny island in Long Island Sound is called Execution Rocks Light, not because executions took place there (as some believe), but because of the submerged rocks there that were dangerous for passing ships. And unlike other intriguing islands around the city, you can actually visit and spend the night there!

Scouting's got a little history on the ups and downs the island has seen, and notes that "in 2007, [it] was identified as excess by the Department of the Interior, which essentially meant it was up for adoption." A Philly couple, Craig Morrison and Linell Lukesh, were the only applicants, and now have custody of it. In an effort to raise funds, they're offering visits there—"trips out this summer go for $75 a person to tour both the light and the keeper’s house, and $300 to spend the night." You'll get an air mattress, some water, and a portable camper's toilet as your sparse amenities... but you'll be inside of a 19th century lighthouse! With ghosts!
Once funds are raised, they plan to restore the place and turn it into a real Bed & Breakfast. (Hart Island, North Brother Island, Bannerman's Island... take note.) You can make reservations here.
