What is dead can never die, especially when it comes to intellectual property with any sort of pre-existing fan base. Sometimes adapting a TV show based on a film based on a book works out—anyone who has seen Hannibal can attest to that. Sometimes it doesn't work so well, like Hulu's recent remake of the classic 1994 British romcom Four Weddings And A Funeral. Another such remake/reboot/adaptation hybrid is coming to Hulu on Valentine's Day: High Fidelity. But this time, the main character is a woman, literally everyone is hotter, and it's set in Brooklyn. Check out the trailer below.
Zoe Kravitz stars as Rob, a Crown Heights record store owner who decides to revisit five important exes in her attempts at fixing her messy love life. The show also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph, David H. Holmes, Jake Lacy, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. All ten episodes will drop on Hulu on February 14th.
As you might already know, the show is a "reimagining" of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel, which was turned into the 2000 film starring John Cusack, Jack Black, Kravitz's mother Lisa Bonet, and my dad, Bruce Springsteen. In both the book and film, the main character of Rob is nominally an extremely neurotic music-obsessed dude who tracks down his former lovers in a narcissistic attempt at finding "the one." Like many budding sociopaths, he is superficially charming, especially when played by Cusack. It will be very interesting to see how the ultra-compelling Kravitz, who recently starred in Big Little Lies and will play Catwoman in the upcoming The Batman series, finds her own take on the character.
Of course, by far the best thing about High Fidelity remains the movie's soundtrack, which included classic songs by The Beta Band, Stereolab, Stevie Wonder, Bill Callahan, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Velvet Underground and more. You can listen to that superb soundtrack on YouTube here, or you can listen to this great Spotify playlist which includes the soundtrack plus every song mentioned in the movie or book.
