Political satire is hard, whether or not you have Johnny Depp on speed dial. Even in the hands of professionals, the extreme cartoonishness of our current political climate makes it increasingly difficult to pull off, or even downright embarrassing. Thank God then for Robert Smigel and Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, who are able to cut through the political bullshit long enough to take a poop all over our ridiculous electoral process.
This week, Funny or Die in conjunction with Hulu released "Triumph's Election Special 2016," which follows everyone's favorite foul-mouthed Borscht Belt-loving puppet dog through Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina as he trolls Ted Cruz via drone, investigates Chris Christie's bowels, teaches Mike Huckabee to insult his fellow candidates, and generally treats the glad-handing caucus experience with the respect it deserves. You can watch the whole thing below.
Besides the aforementioned bits, Triumph has a funny/sad run-in with Mike O'Malley at the Charleston Democratic Debate, explains the real meanings behind John Kasich's National Debt prop, sends Tim Meadows out as Ben Carson to campaign on his behalf (and get stabbed in the process), and sells Trump merchandize to very enthusiastic (and dumb) Trump followers. In addition to the political remotes, Triumph also has an in-studio panel with the likes of Alan Dershowitz and Tay Zonday, and talks to young voters about micro-aggressions, trigger warnings, safe spaces, and identity politics.
