A few days after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and future Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I went on a field trip to The Rage Cage, where you can pay to beat the crap out of computer equipment, video game consoles, office telephones, VHS tapes, typewriters, dishes, and more.

"I thought, 'Wouldn't it be cool if there was a place to smash dishes,'" Rage Cage owner Jeffrey Yip said, recalling how he got started. When he looked online, it turned out there were a bunch of destruction rooms around the country, even upstate, but none in New York City. Now there are two NYC businesses (The Wrecking Club is the other) that cater to New Yorkers' inner-Hulk—or inner-Michael Bolton and Samir:

Yip left his job in software—he explained, "my wife totally supported my decision"—to create the Rage Cage, which sits in the basement of a West 38th Street office building. He now spends a lot of time sourcing materials to destroy. (All the shards of electronics are then recycled as e-waste.)

Customers can pick different packages, starting at $44.99, for a solo turn in one of the rooms —Two Smaller Electronics (Office Phones, Keyboards, Speakers, etc); Ten Smashables (Plates, Cups, Phones, Cameras, and more!)—or splurging for four friends at $169.99: Three Premium Electronics (Gaming Consoles, VCR Players, Printers, etc); Eight Smaller Electronics (Office Phones, Keyboards, Speakers, etc); 30 Smashables (Plates, Cups, Phones, Cameras, and more!). You can also add other items a la carte, but this can add up—a typewriter is 40 bucks! (Disclosure: Our package was complimentary, but we BYO Rage.)

Before you are allowed to even swing a bat (or crowbar or sword—there are various instruments to choose from), you need to sign a waiver and also put on a protective suit, hard hat with visor, and two layers of gloves. Suffice to say, you can work up a satisfying sweat when you're set loose—check out our visit:

Yes, printers and fax machines are the most popular items, Yip says. Also, keyboards are surprisingly fun to attack because all the keys come flying up. However, DVD players and laptops are surprisingly durable and last a long time, in case you have a lot of issues to work out.

Serenity now.
