Tracy Morgan was back in the building last night to relive his SNL glory days as host of the show he was a cast member on for seven years. But getting through that NBC security has become no easy task since the anthrax scare of 2001. Just as he does with sometimes questionable material though, Morgan somehow found a way to make it work. Here's last night's SNL cold opening, which reminded us a little of Alec Donaghy's Hulu ad, and had cameos from WWE Superstar John Cena (who the audience didn't recognize) and Tina Fey (who now may have topped Jon Lovitz for most appearances by a former cast member in one season).
Morgan gave the SNL writers plenty to work with and seems to have a way of making you pay attention to dead-end sketches that would normally be easy to write off early on—probably because his off-the-wall delivery can catch you off-guard at any moment. In the monologue, he called out some of the "racist" headlines around his recent apartment fire and joked that he would be in more sketches last night than he was throughout his tenure as a player. Of course he brought back popular recurring characters Astronaut Jones and Brian Fellow (or as Morgan thinks his name is, "Fellows"). The video for that is after the jump along with last night's visual gagtastic Digital Short and a classic Morgan character not given a reprise, Dominican Lou.
