First of all, there's a man out there making custom Batmobiles (and Batboats!)—you can check them out at Gotham Garage... but maybe not for long. DC Comics is suing the manufacturer, accusing him of infringing on the company’s copyrights and trademarks. The suit was filed last week and they're seeking "a permanent injunction, the destruction of all infringing products and damages of no less than $750,000 for each infringement." Destroy the Batmobile? Impossible!
The Hollywood Reporter notes that DC Comics may have a lot more work ahead filing these suits if they plan to destruct all Batmobiles, pointing out there's one in the East Village, as well as at Utah State University, and at a Ralph Lauren exhibit in Paris.
The original Batmobile was nearly 20-feet long and based on a Ford concept car called the Lincoln Futura. It took just three weeks to design and build, and designer George Barris recently criticized newer versions. He says, “They use computer effects. Our cars actually had to do all that stuff." And just check out all of those gadgets! (Gotham Garage's remake can be seen here.)
