Oh, Statue of Liberty, your long, lonely days are almost done at last! Though our Green Lady's been shuttered since Liberty Island took a bad beating during Hurricane Sandy, officials say she will finally reopen on July 4th. And they REALLY MEAN IT THIS TIME.
The Statue completed a year of renovations just before Sandy hit in October, which means the city's premiere tourist destination's been closed to the public for about seventeen months. And while officials had initially promised a Memorial Day weekend opening, it looks like the Lady's going to have to wait for visitors for another month or so. And naturally it's not just the damage that's causing the hold-up: since there's no end to governmental bickering, the National Park Service and NYPD are apparently arguing over whether or not the statue's security screening operation should be by the ferry terminal in Battery Park City or on Ellis Island.
