Welcome to our newish weekly column, Staff Picks, in which we ask the staffers at our favorite book, music, and movie stores around to town to share with us what they're reading, listening to, and watching this week. We figure they're good people to ask. Last week we talked to Sarah Gerard at McNally Jackson Bookstore, and today we're checking in with beloved secondhand record store Academy Records. We talked to Mr. Lou, the "overseer of pop" who's been with the store for 12 years, to find out what he's been spinning lately.
Frankie Rose & The Outs (self-titled)
Mr. Lou says: "Frankie Rose was the drummer in Dum Dum Girls and Crystal Stilts, and now she's started her own thing. It's an incredible combination of new and old styles, and the lyrics are really very good. It's sort of a nice surprise, because she's always been behind a drum kit for the past few years, and now she's doing mainly guitar and vocals with a full band behind her. I was really a fan of Crystal Stilts, but I wasn't 100% in love with Dum Dum Girls, and I think that's the reason I like this one—she's made a nice leap upward and forward. I've seen a lot of young bands come and go, and I think Frankie's gonna stick around."
Because everything in Academy is secondhand, Mr. Lou isn't sure when the next copy of Frankie Rose's album will be available, but in the meantime, you can check it out here.
