If you haven't been following us on Instagram, here's a little something we posted there this morning. In DUMBO we've walked by this viewfinder on Washington Street many times, perplexed by its odd positioning on the sidewalk in front of an empty lot. Finally, we looked through it, and found old photos! Here's one, showing the same lot, but housing a ferris wheel:

The project has been bolted to the sidewalk since last September, and is called The Urban Field Glass Project, created by Rebecca Hackemann. Check out the site for a map of all the viewing devices she's installed around the city—she hopes to have them in the Bronx, Harlem and Queens by 2015. And guess what... these viewing devices will even bring you to the future! Hackemann explains:

The stereoscopic viewers each contain images of the past and future of that site. In addition they incorporate an interactive feedback feature through an app/barcode. The future images are created by members of the community through an open call and the historical images are taken from archives. All locations comprise interstital, unused lots, architectural squandrels, leftover spaces.
