In 2010, the Tribeca Film Festival screened a 7-minute short documentary by then-NYU film student and very famous actor James Franco. This year, the fest will open with a much longer, much realer doc about the legendary show, called Live From New York! According to the fest's press release, director Bao Nguyen’s film will open the eleven day event on April 15th:
Live From New York!explores the show's early years, an experiment that began with a young Lorne Michaels and his cast of unknowns, and follows its evolution into a comedy institution. Archival footage is interwoven with stolen moments and exclusive commentary from SNL legends, journalists, hosts, crew and others influenced by the comedy giant. Live From New York! captures what has enabled SNL to continually refresh itself over nearly 800 episodes and keep America laughing for 40 years.
There is sadly, somehow, no trailer yet—just look at the still and improv one.
Tickets for the TFF's Opening Night Gala go on sale on March 23rd on their website. The fest will run through April 26th.
