Sad news for lovers of cheap intellectual lecture, film and music series: the 92nd Street Y has announced they'll be shuttering the downtown location, 92YTribeca, sometime this summer.
The century-plus-old cultural center opened its downtown location at 200 Hudson Street in 2008. There, they catered to a hipper, younger crowd than the uptown flagship did, offering intellectual lectures, indie music performances. and fun events like Grease 2 and Teen Witch sing-a-long screenings. But according to an email 92Y sent out to its employees Wednesday night, the center's board has voted to give up the space. "We believe 92Y can best serve the community now and in the future by investing our resources into our flagship location uptown on Lexington Avenue," the letter, which was signed by executive director Sol Adler, said. It also noted that "a second, physical location is not critical to our mission."
We'll miss 92YTribeca's lineups, which were always entertaining and often affordable. But it's likely that the venue's location, secreted away on a nondescript street near the Holland Tunnel, wasn't great for wrangling patrons, and the building's sterile, awkward design probably didn't help much either. We reached out to 92Y for comment, but have not yet heard back; hopefully, some of the Tribeca location's programming will relocate uptown in the future.
