Last week, Rooftop Films announced they were launching a new Brooklyn Drive-In which will run through October. And today, they've announced a second drive-in theater, this time located at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, opening next month.
The Queens Drive-In is a collaboration between Rooftop Films, the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), and will be located on the grounds of the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The lineup of films hasn't been announced yet, but they will turn the projector on in August, and show movies every week from Wednesday through Sunday.
There will be a mix of new independent and foreign films programmed by Rooftop Films, as well as classic repertory and thematic programming by the MoMI and NYSCI, with series including Science on Screen, sci-fi showcase See It Big!: The Future Is Now, Queens on Film, Jim Henson’s World, and a special presentation of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
You can sign up here to get more information about purchasing movie tickets once they're available; considering the fact that many of the other drive-ins have sold out pretty quickly, you may want to get on that if you're interested.
The movie showings will feature most of the same safety precautions as the other drive-ins which have popped up this summer. You have to wear a mask during the check-in process and whenever you're not in your vehicle; bikes, motorcycles and buses are not allowed. There are toilets on site you can use, but you have to bring your own food and drinks. You can check out the rest of the guidelines for the Brooklyn Drive-In here.
At the Brooklyn Drive-In, which launched this past weekend, tickets cost $45 per car (tickets are only available by purchasing them online here). You can check out their upcoming lineup of films, including the charming Andy Samberg/Cristin Milioti romcom Palm Springs, here.
The Brooklyn Drive-In from Rooftop Films
In early May, The Bel Aire Diner in Astoria started hosting drive-in movie nights in their parking lot which became wildly popular. Then the Skyline Drive-In opened in Greenpoint with a slate of classic movies; theirs is one of the pricier drive-ins ($54.99 per car) but also allows people to sit outside their vehicles. And more recently, Tribeca Enterprises, the company cofounded by Robert De Niro that puts on the Tribeca Film Festival every year, announced that they will be showing outdoor films at Orchard Beach in The Bronx and Nickerson Beach in Nassau County as part of their Tribeca Drive-In series throughout July.
