In 1998's You've Got Mail Meg Ryan's character Kathleen Kelly is "known for her taste." Her apartment is in a brownstone that writer and director Nora Ephron says she believes was on West 89th Street, âBut I could be wrong. Who remembers?â (Check out more photos here.) Could a woman struggling to keep a small (and inherited) bookstore open really afford this place?
Addicted To Love was released in 1997 and most of the movie was filmed where it took place, in Greenwich Village. The plot? "Sam is devastated when the love of his life, Linda, leaves him for a suave Frenchman named Anton. He therefore does what every other normal dumpee would do: he goes to New York and sets up house in the abandoned building opposite his ex-girlfriend's apartment, intent on winning her back and waiting until she decides to leave her current lover." Meg Ryan's character quickly joins him and rom com hilarity ensues (or not). Even when Meg Ryan isn't playing a rich lady she scores an amazing loft! Albeit, a fixer-upper.
It even had a nice projection wall!

The apartment they were spying on across the street.
The 2001 romantic comedy Kate & Leopold featured a ton of great Manhattan real estate (time-traveling Leopold goes back to visit his boyhood home, filmed at 1 Hanover Square). Ryan's apartment in the film was actually built on a soundstage, with exteriors featuring authentic looking fire escapes.
Not a bad roof.
