Instant Entertainment: Mega-Creature Camp Edition

All this rain got you down? Brighten your spirits with some of the most fantastically campy sea creature-themed films ever made. Not coincidentally, The Asylum, a studio specializing in super low-budget "mockbusters" is behind all of these gems, which feature two '80s pop starlets and a past-his-prime male lead. But which mega-creature is right for you?

Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus stars Deborah "Debbie" Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas as a scientist and government suit, respectively, working together to hunt down a giant prehistoric shark and octopus that have been accidentally unfrozen from a glacier in Alaska. The acting is uniformly awful, and the plot is just shy of ludicrous. Not that the plot really matters—you're here to watch a giant shark eat an airplane. It's arguably the most popular Asylum film to date, and has spawned a sequel, Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, starring Jaleel White, fka Steve Urkel, both of which are available on Netflix Instant.

Mega Piranha stars Debbie Gibson's arch-nemesis Tiffany and former Brady Bunch-er Barry Williams as they try to stop mutant pirhanas who are swimming from the Amazon to Florida. Don't question the geography— just revel in the horrifically low-budget feeding frenzy, complete with scenes recycled from other Asylum films like Mega Shark, that takes up a solid half of the film. Created specifically to capitalize off of Piranha 3-D, Mega Piranha was Syfy Channel's most-watched film of 2010. It's available on Netflix Instant, of course, for your viewing pleasure.

Finally, for those simply unable to choose, we suggest Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, a Syfy Channel original movie starring Deborah Gibson and Tiffany. You're welcome.
