One of our favorite things in Austin is the avocado margarita at Curra's Grill (the one on Oltorf Street). These are tough to come by anywhere else, but we tracked one down at Macondo (157 E Houston Street, LES); one Yelp reviewer says, "avocado might sound gross to some, but it's so refreshing that you will hardly taste it!" After that you can head over to the less expensive, El Nuevo Amanecer (117 Stanton Street, LES), but be careful of their frozen margsâwe're pretty sure they contain Everclear.Make your own Avocado Margarita at home:1 ripe and delicious avocado¼ cup fresh lemon or lime juice2 cups crushed ice½ cup tequila¼ cup triple secBlend well, then rub the rim of the glass with lime and dip in a coarse sea salt and chili pepper mix.
via Austin ChronicleThe search for good queso in the city has led us to this Chowhound post, where some fellow New Yorkers suggest hitting up Rodeo Bar (27th and 3rd) or Arriba Arriba (762 9th Avenue) for your queso fix.Make your own Queso at home:1 can (10 oz each) Ro*Tel Original Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies, undrained1 pkg (16 oz each) Velveeta® Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product, cut into cubesCombine undrained tomatoes and cheese in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat 5 minutes or until cheese is completely melted, stirring frequently. Serve with tortilla chips.

<p>We may not have a <a href="http://www.texasoutside.com/hamiltonpool.htm">Hamilton Pool</a> here, but we do have <a href="http://www.nyspacastle.com">Spa Castle</a>! Take a day trip to Queens and take a breather. You can enjoy their facilities all day long for just <a href="http://www.nyspacastle.com/eng/introduction/introduction02.php">$35 to $45</a>, <em>plus</em> they've got a food court and a bar & grill.</p>
Migas: a Tex-Mex breakfast staple, and the thing that most SXSW-ers consume before their first complimentary Lonestar beer or whatever it is that's free at the show they're totally on the list for. You can find them right here in NYC, too (here's a comprehensive list at Yelp). Sidecar Bar & Grill (560 5th Avenue) and Good Restaurant (89 Greenwich Avenue) both serve up migas that even an Austin native could enjoy.Make your own Migas at home:8 eggs1/4 cup of milk or half-and-half1/3 cup of peanut oil4 corn tortillas cut into strips1/2 an onion diced (about 1/2 a cup)4 jalapeno peppers diced1 cup of shredded cheese such as Longhorn cheddar or Monterrey Jack1 to 2 cups of salsa1 cup of cilantroSalt and pepper to tastePut it all together and enjoy!
