Take the wrought iron legs off that old school sewing machine and attach it to a nice table top. [Ed. note: my parents did this!]

"It doesn't take a carpentry wizard to zap up one of these tables," Apartment Life declared. All you need to make these guys is some tools, glass, and wood (pretty standard). At the time, they said it would come to a grand total of $10.

Create a technicolor shadow show with a white wall and colored glass objects. "This eye-stopper works like a big kaleidescope projected on your wall. Use any colored, transparent objects you have aroundâashtrays, beer bottles, even colored water in a clear jar. Shoot a strong light at your arrangement through a glass tabletop, then fiddle until you get something you like."

Hang your framed artwork away from the wall and convince your friends you can use your dark arts for good, smart design!

Painting without paint? The magazine says "painting with felt is easyâyou can move the parts around until you get it right. Trace drawings out of books or your own design."
