Are we at Peak Brooklyn? Because the new Miss America is not only Miss New York—but she lives in Park Slope! Mallory Hytes Hagan, a 23-year-old former Miss Brooklyn, was crowned Miss America last night.

One of the questions Hagan faced was about gun control. Good Morning America's Sam Champion said, "In the wake of the Newtown tragedy there has been a lot of talk about gun control. One solution being proposed is an armed guard in every school. Do you think that would make our schools safer?” To which Hagan said, "I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period.” But what does she think about our policy in Syria?!

Hagan is an Alabama native, but she moved to New York after briefly attending American University, "I moved to NY in October 2008 with less than a grand in my pocket, a BIG suitcase and…a lot of hope." She current attends the Fashion Institute of Technology but she did not design a gown for the talent portion—she tap-danced to James Brown's "Get Up Off That Thing":

And she wore a bikini:

Miss America is about scholarships though! According to her bio, her "Scholastic Ambition" is "To obtain a degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing" and her "Career Ambition" is "Global Marketing Director for a cosmetics company." Hagan will now get a $50,000 scholarship. ABC News reports, "As Miss New York, Hagan focused her efforts on Child Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention. Hagan will now become an advocate for the Children’s Miracle Network, the organization’s official charity."

Naturally, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is KVELLING about the news:

"Brooklyn is excited and thrilled that our very own Mallory Hagan—a Park Slope resident by way of Alabama—has been named Miss America 2013. I always say that Brooklyn is proud home to everyone from anywhere, and now that includes a Miss America! I had the honor of meeting Mallory at Brooklyn Borough Hall and have no doubt that she will represent Brooklyn, New York State and all of America with distinction during her reign. On behalf of nearly 2.6 million fellow Brooklynites, I say bravo to Mallory—and we can’t wait to welcome her home and ‘crown’ her Kings County style!”

The last time Miss New York won the Miss America crown was in 1984, when Vanessa Williams won. Williams resigned the crown after nude photographs surfaced.
