Last we saw Hanksy, he was tagging up the West Coast with his usual brand of punny street art, intertextual celebrity-culture parodies, and (for the skeptics) free advertising. We like Hanksy. "Weird Gal Yancovic," "DJamie Foxx," and "Pee Wee Mer-man" were among some of the highlights. In addition, Hanksy gave L.A. their requisite dose of James Franco. "The Whizard of Oz" emblazoned James Franco's ubiquitous "Is-he-with-us-or-against-us?" smirky-smile on the inside lid of a toilet. Franco was how the West was won.
Now in honor of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, Hanksy has bequeathed NYC with the lavatorial brother-in-arms to his Whiz, "The Great Gatspee." Leonardo DiCaprio adorns this porcelain throne somewhere around Orchard and Hester streets on the LES—any guesses?
