Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day — the civil rights leader's birthday was actually on January 15th, but the federal holiday has been observed on the third Monday of January since 1986.
Today all government offices, schools, and financial markets are closed, as are most banks and all post offices except for the main branch at Eighth Avenue and 32nd Street. Alternate side of the street parking is suspended and there will be no trash or recycling pickups. Subways and buses operate on a normal weekday schedule with minor adjustments to arrival times on some bus routes.
Here are ways you can celebrate King's life and achievements around the city — and a map of places in the boroughs where he's honored with a naming. Watch his last speeh, and his famous "I have a dream" speech after the jump.
