The Louis Armstrong music festival is entering its second year, and it has snagged some big-name talent for this go-round: Ms. Lauryn Hill.
Hill has made headlines over the past week for last-minute cancellations of shows in Israel and Nigeria, so it's refreshing to hear that the Jersey-girl-made-good is booked for a free show in Flushing Meadows Corona Park as part of the Louis Armstrong Wonderful World Fest. Now, let's just hope she shows up.
The festival is happening June 20th from noon to 8 pm and, though it's free, attendees need tickets, which can be found online here. Also scheduled to perform are Ozomatli, Antibalas, and New Orleans brass legends Rebirth Brass Band. Here they are playing in a second-line parade.
Louis Armstrong grew up in New Orleans, and in 1943, moved to Corona, Queens, where he lived out the last three decades of his life. He performed at the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, making the festival a neat homage.
