Your Memorial Day weekend of beach, barbecues and remembrance has come and gone, but you can still help a local Marine before he's deployed to the Middle East. Eduardo Ortiz, a Brooklyn resident, is leaving New York this Thursday for training before leaving for Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. With his deployment, Eduardo is looking for a NYC-based foster parent for his seven-month old dog, Honey, through May, 2012 (the length of his deployment).

Here are the details about Honey from Eduardo:

Honey is a Staffordshire Terrier (Pitt) mix who trusts women quickly and is not too fond of men until she's had enough time to get to know them. I rescued her back in November from Animal Haven in Manhattan. She's up-to-date on all of her shots and is in perfect health.

Currently she spends about 3 days at Unleash: Brooklyn in daycare, socializing and playing with puppies and bigger dogs. She's also been training with Denise Herman of Empire of the Dog on one-on-one sessions about once a month. Honey is house-broken and has yet to have an accident inside, she is also crate trained.

I'm currently looking to find a viable fostering parent for her, ideally female, as she'll immediately take to them rather than it being a slower developing situation with a guy

Eduardo tells us that he had a foster lined up three weeks ago, but he was just informed over the weekend that the foster wouldn't be able to continue the arrangement. Those interested in fostering Honey should email Eduardo at eduardo [at] efortiz [dot] com.
