When MTV first aired in the early 80's we were too young to really appreciate it, we grew in to it though and have fond memories of sitting on our plush carpet and watching "groundbreaking videos". These were pre-texting and pre-internet days, so to vote for a favorite video on the Top 5 at 5, one would would call "1-800-DIAL-MTV". The game show, Remote Control was one of the first (of many) non-music programs. And everyone tuned in for hours, days, when Kurt Cobain died - the network had continuous coverage that the younger generation related to more over other news channels.
You know how this story goes, though. Reality tv and other shows replaced videos, and the only videos aired anymore are the same ones over and over again (you've seen TRL, right?) So today the channel turns 25, and has become way less mature since we stopped watching in the early-mid 90's.
To celebrate, the MTV site has a yearbook up if you want to revisit some of your favorite videos. We suggest just searching for them on YouTube though. We found that great video above of Nirvana getting interviewed after the MTV Music Awards, and trashing the network.
