So we've finally entered Halloween season and we can expect a flood of scary movie reruns as well as magazines competing for best horror film list. Not suprisingly, both Total Film and Giant Magazine hail The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as the top terror title, with Halloween and The Exorcist in at second, and Suspria and The Night of the Living Dead vying for third (interestingly, The Fly came in at #7 on Giant's list). While we’ll be repeatedly subjected to these movies on cable in the next few weeks, we’re particularly excited for Showtime’s Masters of Horror series, featuring 13 original one-hour movies from Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist), Joe Dante (The Howling, Gremlins), John Carpenter (Halloween), Takashi Miike, and more, on Oct. 28th. Showtime’s quality combined with such A-list horror directors make this a must see. Definitely TIVO-worthy material.
If, however, you're interested in hitting the theatre before the opening of the stylish Asian horror Three…Extremes, then consider signing up for Loews free Fan Favorites' Horror Classics. Each month, Loews 34th Street re-releases films on Thursday nights at 8:00 PM and this month's theme features Ghostbusters II (Oct. 13th), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Oct. 20th), and The Exorcist (Oct. 27th). While we love Ghostbusters, we’re a bit wary of Frankenstein (seriously, who listed that as their fan favorite?!), but again, its free, and there’s nothing better than scary movies in a dark theatre.
