This week, our favorite British actress/spirit animal Emma Thompson is making her New York stage debut in the New York Philharmonic's concert of Sweeney Todd. Here's a little taste of Thompson's Mrs. Lovett:
Thompson will be starring opposite opera singer Bryn Terfel, who told the Western Mail, "Emma is fantastic and you really learn from people like her... I have to delve a little bit deeper when it comes to certain things like dialogue. I know I have to be at the top of my game. Towards the end of this process you like to think you’ve developed as an artist as well as breathing the same air as an Oscar-winner."
He added, "Emma walks in and knows everyone’s names and there are around 50 people here. She’s just magnificent. People may want to hear you say ‘she’s so difficult’ but there’s nothing negative to say. We were having a drink last night and people were coming over and saying they enjoyed her work and wanted a quick picture with her and she was incredibly gracious." Speaking of gracious, Thompson dropped in on the cast of Heathers The Musical (they are rehearsing in the same building) with some meat pies:
There are five performances of the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical, starting on Wednesday, March 5, and running through Saturday, March 8. There are some tickets left (in the $135-range) via the NY Phil website and a little less via Stubhub and Craigslist. And Smash "fans," Christian Borle is playing Pirelli.
