With so many couples itching to get married on Sunday, the first day that gay marriage will be legal in NY, the state held a lottery to decided which of the 2,500+ applications would be given one of the 764 available marriage slots across the five boroughs. The lottery was closed to new entries as of noon today, and winners will be notified tomorrow—but one couple already knows they'll be walking down the aisle with no strings attached.
Rick and Rod, the puppet characters from Avenue Q, will be married at City Hall before the shows matinee performance on Sunday. Rod released a statement expressing their gratitude for being able to participate in the momentous day:
To have this finally happen for us—especially so soon after Will and Kate—is unbelievable to me. I realize there are a lot of broken hearts out there now that Ricky and I are off the market—step back, all you chorus boys!—but I've known since Day One that Ricky is the husband for me. He's the furry fellow I want to spend my life with both on and off the stage.
Another couple who don't have to worry about whether to book a reception hall on Sunday are City Hall chief policy adviser John Feinblatt and the city’s commissioner for consumer affairs Jonathan Mintz. Their nuptials will be officiated by Mayor Bloomberg, but Hizzoner won't be the only celebrity there: Tony award winner Audra McDonald will be singing at the ceremony.
