Fashion designer John Galliano, who was fired from Christian Dior after accusations he uttered anti-Semitic remarks at Parisian cafe customers and after a video of him proclaiming his love for Hitler surfaced, "completely" denies the allegations of racism and anti-Semitism. In a statement, he said, "Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offence." But French authorities are moving ahead to prosecute him.
Last week, at the La Perle cafe, patrons claimed Galliano made anti-Semitic remarks; one said he called her a "dirty Jew face." However, Galliano said in his statement, "I was subjected to verbal harassment and an unprovoked assault when an individual tried to hit me with a chair having taken violent exception to my look and my clothing. For these reasons I have commenced proceedings for defamation and the threats made against me." But he added, "I fully accept that the accusations made against me have greatly shocked and upset people." After last week's accusations, Christian Dior suspended Galliano and then a video from months ago shows Galliano discussing how he loves Hitler surfaced on British tabloid The Sun's website.
According to the NY Times, "The prosecutors office said the trial could take place between April and June this year, and that if found guilty Mr. Galliano could face as long as six months in prison and up to €22,500, or $31,000, in fines. French law makes it a crime to incite racial hatred; the statute has been used in the past to punish anti-Semitic remarks."
It is believed that Galliano will be going to an Arizona rehabilitation facility, The Meadows, where designer Donatella Versace and singer Elton John have also spent their rehabs.
