The New York International Auto Show opens its door to the public today, giving car lovers and the curious a chance to look at cars they'll be able to drive and others they'll dream about.

We'll have a gallery of the whimsical cars and courses we saw later, but check out the ones that might suit urban drivers, from compact models to ones that are electric and/or hybrid. Plus, there was the unveiling of the sexy Dodge Viper as well as dueling taxis!

Apparently the first U.S. auto show was at Madison Square Garden (the old one) in 1900—and it was referred to as the "horseless horse show"! While there are many auto shows in the county now, Motor Authority noted that "the sheer number of new product and concept reveals has consolidated the event’s position amongst the world leaders of international auto shows... New York’s event has a reputation for being a haven for luxury-brand and sports-car introductions, as well as the place where some interesting concepts and special editions roll out."

The NY International Auto Show runs through April 15 at the Jacob Javits Center; tickets are $15 for adults.
